Puma's broken leg
About a week after we adopted Puma, he attempted a jump onto our counter and missed! His fall caused him to brake his leg! Needless to say, as the new parents of this sweet kitten, we felt terrible! Were we not watching him closely enough? I personally think it happened because the counter is marble and quite slick. (Another great reason to have a cat tree for climbing rather than counters! ) His leg needed immediate attention. It's hard to tell if a cat has truly broken a leg after a fall or jump. They may not cry in pain like a human would but rather try to "work thru it" by not placing any weight on the damaged leg. It is very important that if you suspect your cat has broken his or her leg that you get it checked by your vet. Left untreated, the cat can have lifelong problems. We were not completely sure if Pumas leg was broken but we were not leaving anything to chance, so off we went to the vet. I wrapped Puma in a soft blanket to stabilize his leg while Dave drove. Some times it's best to put the cat in a cat carrier if you worry about them jumping around the car and hurting them selves further. Puma however, is a very calm cat, even with a potential broken leg. When we arrived at the vet, even before the X-ray, the vet was quite sure it was a break. Puma was so well behaved and never once tried to bite us. Apparently it is quite common for even the nicest cat to bite their owner under this type of stress. The X-ray confirmed that he had a spiral fracture and that he would need to be placed in a cast for 4-8 weeks! Poor Puma! No more jumping for him! I thought it was ironic that our cat named Puma had to wear a Nike cast! but it did the trick! and as much as he did not like the cast after a few days of rest he was moving quite well even with the cast on! 8 weeks later the cast came off! I'm happy to say Puma is now a happy, healthy full grown cat with no issues with his back leg!
